Red Raven Meikkel Murray Sinks Alley-Oop Pushing Coffeyville Over Butler 83-81 to Win Region VI Championship!

2 seconds remained in the game with Coffeyville and Butler tied at 81-81.  Ravens had the ball out of bounds at their end of the court, Raven sophomore guard Tony Hutson calmly stepped up from the out of bounds line and threw a perfect alley-oop lob pass to the streaking Red Raven forward Meikkel Murray who layed it gently off the backboard for the easy layup.  Game!

With Murray's basket, Coffeyville defeated the Butler Grizzlies 83-81 to win the 2020 Region VI Div I Men's Basketball Championship and earn a trip to the 2020 NJCAA National Tournament.  The 2020 Region VI Championship is the third in the last four years for the Red Ravens.   Coffeyville also earned a fourth straight appearance to the NJCAA National Tournament and the 11th appearance overall under Coach Herkelman.

In the first half, Butler forged a small 5-8 point lead and maintained it for most of the first half.  At halftime, Butler had a five-point 44-39 lead.  The second half saw the Red Ravens pull closer and take the lead 50-48 at 15:50 mark.  From that point on, the two teams took turns leading through the remainder of the game with Murray taking the lead for good for Coffeyville with 2 seconds remaining.  Butler did have a last gasp three-pointer at the buzzer that fell well off and Coffeyville had the 83-81 victory.

Coffeyville's NJCAA Hall of Fame head coach Jay Herkelman talked about his team after the game, "What a great team effort from the guys.  To have the toughness to fight through the fatigue and injuries to get the win.  I'm really proud of this group.  We have come a long way from November."

Meikkel Murray led the Ravens in the game with 15 points while sophomore Manny Crump pitched in a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  Other Raven contributors included freshmen Larry White with 14 points, freshman Tylor Perry with 12 points and freshman Bostyn Holt with 12 points. 

Coffeyville was well represented on the 2020 Region VI All-Tournament team that was immediately announced after the game.  Coffeyville placed three on the All-Tournament team with guards Tony Hutson and Tylor Perry both earning All-Tournament selections as well as Red Raven forward Meikkel Murray earning the Region VI Tournament MVP for his outstanding play in the Region VI Tournament.

The 2020 NJCAA Div I Men's Basketball Championship Tournament will be held March 16-21 in Hutchinson Kansas.  Tournament information will be released at a later date.
