Coffeyville, Kan. - The #10 NJCAA-ranked Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Football Team scored a decisive 14 points in the fourth quarter on their way to a 24-7 victory over their in-county rivals the Independence Pirates. With the victory, the Ravens' overall record improves to 8-2 on the season including a 4-1 record in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) games.
Coffeyville opened up the scoring in the first quarter as freshman kicker Roan McCarthy booted a 25-yard field goal to put the Ravens up 3-0 late in the first quarter. Late in the second quarter Coffeyville's freshman running back Steven Robinson got loose for a 33-yard touchdown run to give the Ravens a 10-0 (McCarthy PAT good) lead going into halftime.
Midway through the third quarter, Independence's offense connected on a 49-yard touchdown pass to tighten the scoreboard to a 10-7 lead for Coffeyville.
Coffeyville's 14 fourth-quarter points came from their defense as Red Raven freshman linebacker Lonnie Burt intercepted a Pirate pass attempt that he returned 24 yards for a touchdown as well as sophomore linebacker Khmari Johnson scooping up a Pirate fumble and racing 23 yards for the scoop and score touchdown. Those two defensive touchdowns gave the Ravens some breathing room as Coffeyville posted the 24-7 final victory.
With the victory, Coffeyville finds themselves fighting for a share of the 2024 KJCCC crown. Coffeyville has one game remaining, the Ravens will play at Butler on Saturday, November 23rd. If Butler wins that game they will claim the outright Jayhawk Conference championship. However if Coffeyville wins it will create a three-way tie for the conference championship with Butler, Coffeyville, and Hutchinson. Kick-off in El Dorado on November 23rd is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
