Red Ravens Lose in OT to #14 Broncbusters of Garden City 29-23

Coffeyville, Kan. - The Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Football team opened up their home schedule with a matchup against the #14 ranked Broncbusters of Garden City while celebrating a Hall of Fame Coach during Skip Foster Appreciation Day.  The Red Ravens jumped out quickly on the Broncbusters early in the game but ultimately lost in overtime 29-23.  With the loss, Coffeyville's overall record dropped to 2-1 on the season including a 0-1 record in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) play.

Statistically, the Ravens outplayed the Broncbusters gaining more total yards (381 yards to 296), as well as running more plays (81-67).  The difference in the game wound up being turnovers, Coffeyville committed two costly interceptions that were both returned for touchdowns.  Those gifted 12 points could not be overcome.

Garden City opened the game with a 13-play drive ending with a 25-yard field goal to take the early 3-0 lead.  

Coffeyville responded with a 9-play 75-yard touchdown drive capped off by a 10-yard touchdown pass from red-shirt freshman quarterback Carson Creehan to freshman receiver Yetxiel Perez Gilbes.  With the Roan McCarthy extra point successful the Red Ravens gained a 7-3 advantage in the first quarter.

After a Garden City three and out, Coffeyville marched 97 yards in 7 plays ending with De'Andre Kelly, a red-shirt freshman running back, plowing ahead for a 3-yard touchdown run to give the Ravens a 14-3 lead late in the first quarter. 

Coffeyville's defense was holding strong starting the second quarter as the Ravens held the Broncbuster to another quick drive going 6 plays and punting back to Coffeyville.  

Coffeyville's first possession of the second quarter resulted in a pick-six as Garden City intercepted Coffeyville's Carson Creehan and returned the ball 29 yards for the touchdown.  The Broncbuster failed on a 2-point conversion and Coffeyville's turnover pulled trimed Coffeyville's lead to 14-9.

Coffeyville's defense helped add to the point total as the Ravens tackled a Garden City receiver in the end zone for a safety.  The added two points gave the Ravens a 16-9 lead with 9:34 left in the second quarter.

Garden City responded as they marched off a 9-play 80-yard touchdown drive culminating with a 1-yard touchdown run.  The Broncbuster extra point was good and the two teams were knotted at 16-16 with four minutes remaining in the first half.

Coffeyville ended the first half scoring on a long 10-play 75-yard touchdown drive ending with another Kelly 3-yard touchdown run.  McCarthy's extra point was good and the Ravens took a 23-16 lead into halftime over the #14-ranked Broncbusters.

The second half proved more of an obstacle for the offenses of both teams as the scoring dried up in the second half.  Garden City was able to convert a long touchdown drive late in the third quarter to tie the game up at 23-23.  

Coffeyville had some long chances for points in the fourth quarter as freshman placekicker Roan McCarthy missed field goals of 51 yards and 44 yards in the fourth quarter.

After the overtime coin flip, Coffeyville received the ball first, and on their third play of overtime, a pass from Red Raven red-shirt freshman Joseph Vick was picked off and returned 86 yards for the deciding touchdown for Garden City.  #14 Garden City had the 29-23 victory.

Coffeyville will return to action on Saturday, September 21st as they will travel to El Dorado Kansas to play the Butler Grizzlies.  Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
