Coffeyville, Kan. - In their last game before the holiday break, the Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Women's Basketball Team fought back from an 18-point first-half deficit to defeat the Tigers of Cowley College 81-73 in overtime. With the victory, the Red Ravens head into their break with an overall record of 10-2 including a 5-2 KJCCC conference mark.
Coffeyville's largest deficit of the game came midway through the second quarter when the Red Ravens found themselves down 32-14. However, Coffeyville finished the second quarter hard, cutting the gap to 41-32, or a nine-point deficit at halftime.
Coffeyville opened the second half with a 10-3 run to pull within two points 44-42 at the 7:05 mark of the third quarter. Coffeyville took their first lead of the game at 48-47 with four minutes left in the third quarter.
Late in the fourth quarter, Red Raven sophomore Karys Washington sank two free throws with a minute left in the game to tie the match up at 67-67. With about 40 seconds left, Cowley missed a 3-pointer. With about 20 seconds to go, the Red Ravens also missed a 3-pointer, with Cowley grabbing the rebound and calling time out. Cowley's driving lay-up bounced out as time expired to send the game into overtime.
Coffeyville took control in the five-minute overtime period outscoring Cowley 14-6 to earn the 81-73 victory.
Game leaders for Coffeyville included sophomore guard Norika Welch who scored a season-high 27 points while sinking 4/6 from behind the 3-point arc, sophomore Karys Washington posted a 15-point 14-rebound double-double, freshman Aubrey Hishaw scored 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, and freshman Hallie Kitchen contributed 10 points and 6 assists.
Coffeyville will return to action after the holidays with a road game scheduled for Saturday, January 4th in El Dorado against the Butler Grizzlies. Tipoff in El Dorado is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
