Four Ravens Score in Double Figures in 77-73 Home Victory Over Butler

February 22, 2020

To end the 2020 regular season, the Coffeyville Community College Red Raven men's basketball team defeated the Butler Grizzlies 77-73 this past Saturday night in Nellis Hall.  The win moves the Red Raven's overall record to 22-8 and 14-6 in Kansas Jayhawk Conference play.  The 14-6 conference record earned the Raven's third place in the seven-team KJCCC East division.

The game was a matchup of rivals but it also served as the first trip back to Nellis Hall for Butler head coach Kyle Fisher.  Fisher had served as the assistant coach for the Ravens the last seven years and Saturday's matchup was the first time for Coach Fisher to be in Nellis Hall as an opposing head coach.

The Ravens won the game by four points (77-73) but the second half saw the Ravens build a big lead (Coffeyville led by 17 with 7:49 remaining in the game) and then weather a late-game surge by the Grizzlies to finally secure the 77-73 victory.  For the game, Coffeyville had 7 more turnovers then Butler, but the Ravens outrebounded Butler (43-31) and gained an advantage at the charity stripe shooting 17/22 to Butler's 8/13.

"It was a good win for us", said head coach Jay Herkelman. "I was very proud of our sophomore's in the game tonight as it was their last regular-season game in Nellis Hall as well as facing coach Fisher who had recruited a lot of them when he was here.  I was proud of our effort tonight."

On the evening, Coffeyville placed four players in double figures in the stat book.  Sophomore Meikkel Murray led the Raven scorer's with 20 points and 7 rebounds.  Sophomore Tony Hutson pitched in 16 points as well as sophomore Manny Crump scoring 14 points and freshman Tylor Perry rounding it out with 13 points.

Coffeyville will host the first round of the 2020 Region VI Tournament.  The #5 seeded Red Ravens will host the #12 seeded Dodge City Conquistadors on Wednesday, Feb 26th with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 pm in Nellis Hall.  Click HERE to view the entire 2020 Region VI Men's Tournament bracket.
