Region VI Champions!

Region VI Champions!

The Coffeyville Community College men's basketball team defeated the NJCAA #2 ranked Hutchinson Blue Dragons 91-87 in overtime to win a thrilling Region VI Championship.

The 2017 Region VI Championship is the first for the Red Ravens since winning the 2011 Region VI Tournament.

The Hutchinson Blue Dragons men's basketball team has had enough of the Red Ravens.  Coming into the Region VI Final, the Blue Dragons had a 31-1 record with their only loss coming at the hands of the Red Ravens, a one point loss (86-85) in Hutchinson back on January 28th. Now they have two losses to Coffeyville.

This game was a see saw back and forth type of game with both teams looking a little tired from the four day tournament stretch.

Hutchinson got out early and was up on the Red Ravens at halftime, 36-32.  Neither team was shooting the ball extremely well with Coffeyville shooting 36% and Hutchinson shooting 38% in the half.

The second half saw the Red Ravens execute better and the game came down to the end.   Greg Poleon made a free throw with seven seconds left in the game to put the Ravens up by two, 73-71.  However, the Blue Dragons were able to get their last bucket of regulation on a layup with 1 second remaining on the clock to tie the game and send it into overtime.

The overtime session was more of the same from the second half with the two teams taking turns exchanging the lead.

Malik Keith put the Ravens up by one with a made 3 pointer that he drilled with 12 seconds remaining.  The Blue Dragons answered with a turnover and Red Raven Tedrick Wolfe was fouled and he promptly made both charity shots.  Hutchinson missed a last minute 3 at the buzzer to tie it and Coffeyville had their Region VI Championship.

Stat leaders for Coffeyville in the game include sophomore forward Tedrick Wolfe who had led the Red Ravens with 28 points and 7 rebounds, freshmen guard Travis Washington (21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists) and freshmen guard Malik Keith (15 points on 3/5 three pointers and 4 rebounds).

The Region VI All-Tournament team was announced at the conclusion of the men's final and Red Raven's Malik Keith and Tedrick Wolfe were announced as the Co-MVP's of the Region VI Tournament.  Travis Washington was also announced as part of the Region VI All-Tournament team.

The 2017 Region VI Championship vaults the Red Ravens into the NJCAA Men's Division I National Tournament being held at Hutchinson Community College March 20th through 25th.
