Red Raven Men's Soccer Earn First Victory of Year With a 7-1 Victory Over #14 Johnson County

Overland Park, Kan. - The Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Men's Soccer Team was on the road for the first time this season with a tough game against a NJCAA ranked opponent, #14 Johnson County Community College.  The Red Ravens came out of the gates blazing and upset the #14 ranked Cavaliers of Johnson 7-1.  The victory evens up Coffeyville's early-season record at 1-1 which includes a 1-1 KJCCC conference mark.

Once arriving on Johnson County's campus, the team was quick to recognize that the game was going to be made ever harder with very strong winds. The lads came flying out the blocks and managed to take the lead a minute and a half into the game, with a composed finish from Edwin Towers and Connor Pugh with the assist. Shortly after Towers' goal, Luis Fernandes picked up the ball and slipped Connor Pugh through on goal for him to find the bottom corner and increase the lead to 2-0. The Ravens came into the halftime break up 2-0 and full of confidence for the second half; they were encouraged to take full advantage of the wind now at their backs and put the game to bed.

Complacency was probably the best way to describe the start of the second half for the Ravens. Two minutes into the half, Johnson played a ball down the line, pulled it back to a man on the edge of the box who slotted the ball with ease past debut goalkeeper Dominic Bombourg. Nevertheless, the reaction was great from the lads and managed to pick themselves back up with a second goal from forward Connor Pugh who was assisted by Pedro Branco. The flood gates then opened and the Ravens began to take serious charge of the game by adding a fourth goal from Luis Fernandes who was assisted by Nicolaus Stoddart and a fifth from Connor Pugh assisted by Nicolaus Stoddart to round off his hat-trick. With ten minutes to go in the game and the Ravens were not done applying the pressure, freshman Nicolaus Stoddart was introduced into the game and picked up the ball around 25 yards out before driving forward with it and finding a finish into the bottom corner. Moments later he found himself in a similar position with the ball and this time slotted it near post for his second goal of the game.

Coffeyville now looks ahead to Wednesday, April 7th,  where they will return home to play Neosho County Community College at Veteran Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
