Red Ravens Fall to Cowley in SubRegional Championship Game

Arkansas City, Kan. - The Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Baseball Team was able to win a couple of games at the Region VI East Subregional hosted by Cowley College, but in the end fell to Cowley College in the Championship game.  The Red Ravens ended the season with a 27-23 record including a 15-9 home record.

Coffeyville started the Subregional out with a thrilling win against the Cougars of Barton County. The game was tied at 5-5 in the top of the ninth when Red Raven sophomore Trey McClelland blasted a two-run homer to put the Ravens up 7-5.  Coffeyville closed out the bottom of the ninth for the 7-5 victory and moved into the second round of the Subregional.

In the second round of the subregional, the Red Ravens faced the #7 NJCAA ranked Cowley College Tigers. The Ravens were able to jump out to a 2-1 lead in the game through the fifth but Cowley plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead.  Coffeyville tacked on a run in the top of the ninth to put a scare into the Tigers, however, Cowley closed out the ninth for the 4-3 victory.  With the double-elimination format, the Ravens, with their first loss, were then scheduled to play Barton for the second time in the Subregional later in the day. 

The second go-around with Barton was an elimination game with the winner moving on to face Cowley in the Subregional Championship game and the loser going home.  The Ravens found themselves down early in the game trailing 7-1 at the end of the fourth inning.  However, Coffeyville scored five in the fifth and a big eight runs in the sixth to take a 14-8 lead after six innings.  Coffeyville went on to close out the game for the 14-8 victory sending the Cougars of Barton home and the Red Ravens into the Subregional Championship game against the aforementioned #7 ranked Cowley Tigers.

The Subregional Championship game was the fifth game in three days for the Red Ravens and the Tigers were able to connect early in the Championship game scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning to put the Ravens in an early 5-0 hole.  The Tigers plated three more in the fourth and another in the fifth to take a 9-0 lead into the sixth inning.  Coffeyville was able to score three in the seventh, but the Tigers finished off the Ravens by scoring two in the seventh and two in the eighth to get the 13-3 eight-inning victory.
