Dodge City, Kansas

The #11 NJCAA ranked Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Football team defeated the #17 ranked Dodge City Conquistadors 31-26.

On an afternoon that saw two NJCAA ranked Kansas community colleges square off against each other, the Red Ravens were able to hold on against a late surge from the Conquistadors to secure the 31-26 victory.

The Red Ravens came out of the gates very quickly, with sophomore running back Marcelus Ware, on the second snap of the game, taking the hand off and racing 69 yards to pay dirt.  Place kicker Cooper Lee's extra point was good and just like that the Red Ravens were up 7-0.

Dodge City answered quickly with their first possession scoring on a 54 yard rush on their fourth play of the game.  However, Dodge's extra point was muffed and the Red Ravens still held the lead, 7-6.

Later in the first quarter, the Red Ravens scored on a more traditional 13 play, 72 yard drive capped off by a 8 yard touchdown pass from Red Raven sophomore quarterback Coleman Key to sophomore half back Mauricio Chio.  Lee was again good with the extra point and the Red Ravens extended their lead to 14-6.

Early in the second quarter the Red Ravens further extended their lead with a 24 yard field goal by Cooper Lee.  This put Coffeyville ahead by 11 with a score of 17-6.

The Conquistador's very next possession saw them score on a 5 play 51 yard drive that ended in the endzone.  However, Dodge's try for the two point conversion failed and CCC still held a 17-12 lead.

The last four minutes of the second quarter say the Red Ravens go 71 yards in 10 plays with the last of those 10 plays being a 10 yard touchdown pass from Key to sophomore wide receiver Malik Stanley, from Topeka Kansas.  Cooper Lee was again good on the extra point and the Red Ravens went into halftime with a 24-12 lead.

The third quarter was a battle back and forth with the only scoring coming at the end of the quarter with the Conquistador's scooping up a Red Raven fumble and taking it 42 yards for the score.  Dodge's extra point was good this time and the Ravens lead was cut to 24-19.

The Red Ravens got back into the scoring column early in the fourth quarter with a 7 play 57 yard scoring drive capped off with a one yard touchdown pass from quarterback Key to Chio.  The touchdown and Lee extra point extended the Red Raven lead to 31-19.

However, the Raven 12 point lead was cut to 5 with Dodge scoring on a short touchdown pass with only 45 seconds remaining in the game.  The successful extra point cut the Red Raven lead to 5.

On the ensueing kick-off, the Conquistador's successfully tried an onside kick and recovered the ball at their own 49 yard line.  A couple of plays later, Dodge completed a pass to the Red Raven 26 yard line to move within striking distance.  An incomplete pass later and Dodge had one play left with 3 seconds on the clock.  The last play of the game was a Conquistador pass into the endzone that was batted down by Red Raven sophomore DB Marquavis Gibbs to secure the victory.

The win is the Red Ravens third in a row and moves Coffeyville's overall record to 6-3 and also brings their conference record up to 2-3.

#11 Coffeyville Red Ravens will be back on the road again next week with a game at Highland Kansas on November 5th to play the #RV Highland Scotties.  Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
