2019 Red Raven Football Stumbles Out of the Gate

The 2019 Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Football team opened up their season on the road Thursday, August 22nd against the #2 NJCAA preason ranked Iowa Western Reivers.  The Red Ravens were able to score first in the contest, but the Reivers eventually pulled away in the second half and defeated the Red Ravens with a final of 36-14.

After their initial score, a 4 play 53 yard drive capped off by a 41 yard pass from sophomore quarterback Aubrey Williams to freshman wide reciever Isaiah Taylor, the Red Ravens looked like they were setting the tone early and taking the fight to the Reivers.  However, trying to take a 14-0 lead, the Ravens coughed up a fumble inside the Reivers 10 yard line that was recovered by Iowa Western.  This led to the Reivers first score of the game, a 14 yard pass to reach the endzone that tied up the game 7-7.  The Ravens attempted a field goal late in second quarter, but it was wide left and the halftime score was set at 7-7.

The game turned in the first 7 minutes of the third quarter.  The Red Ravens came out after halftime and quickly gave up a 60 yard run for a TD along with a short 7 yard rush for a TD to the Reivers.  This was quickly followed up by a saftey scored by Iowa Western.  The combination of those first 7 minutes of the third quarter (a combined 16 points) put the Ravens behind 23-7.  From that point on, Coffeyville was not able to recover.

The Red Ravens were able to add to their score in the fourth quarter with a 53 yard TD pass from QB Aubrey Williams to sophomore wide reciever Jared Miles

However, Iowa Western was able to get the victory with the final score of 36-14.

Top performers for the Red Ravens included QB Aubrey Williams who went 17-24 for 260 yards and 2 TD's and 1 int.  Sophomore running back Kyshaun Bryan was the Ravens leading rusher with 24 yards on 4 carries and sophomore wide receiver Jared Miles had 2 catches for 58 yards and a touchdown.

Coffeyville will regroup and be back in action for their home opener set for Saturday, August 31st at 7:00p in Veteran's Memorial Stadium against the Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds.
