Willie Fields

Running Back (1963-64)

Willie Fields played football and ran track at Field Kindley High School in Coffeyville. He came to Coffeyville Junior College to play for the Ravens as an offensive and defensive halfback on a team that won the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 8-2 in 1963. He played in 1964 as a defensive and offensive halfback that won the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 9-1. He made All-Conference and All-American as an offensive halfback.

Willie was an elusive back, scoring 15 touchdowns including four Southwest Missouri and five against Fort Scott. He was especially good at returning punt returns and defensively with interceptions.

Willie participated in track both years. He ran the 440, 100, 220 and held the school record in the long jump at 23 feet 7 inches. He placed second in the national meet in the long jump.

He attended the University of Texas-El Paso where he played football with two other Ravens: John Davis and Thurman Randel. He received a degree in physical education and biology which he taught along with coaching in El Paso for 15 years. He then worked for U.P.S. until he retired and moved to Wichita, Kan., where he now lives.

Willie played on two championship teams with several other Hall of Famers from the 1960’s including Burl Wood, R.C. Brown, Terry Callahan, Earl Wood, Gary Jamison, Victor Williams and Dr. Jerry Goodmon.

We have looked for Willie for ten years and finally found him. He is certainly deserving to be inducted into the Hall of Fame because of his achievements and contributions in football and track.
