El Dorado Kansas

In their third game of the year, The Coffeyville Community College Red Raven football could not stop the rushing attack of the Butler Grizzlies and lost in El Dorado 36-34.

With the crispness of fall in the air, the Red Ravens defense forced 4 turnovers and scored 14 points, but in the end it was the 391 yards of rushing offense given up to the Grizzlies that sealed the loss for the Red Ravens.

The Red Raven’s first two touchdowns of the game were given to them via turnovers.  The first was an outstanding play by Red Raven freshmen defensive back Darreon Jackson, from Wichita Kansas, who intercepted a forced pass and raced 67 yards for a touchdown.  Sixty five seconds later, Red Raven sophomore Ferrod Gardner, from Dayton Ohio, scooped up a Grizzly fumble and returned it 40 yards for the score.  At this point in the game, Coffeyville was leading 14-7 midway through the first quarter.

To complete the wild first quarter, Butler kicks a 30 yard field goal and rushes for a 80 yard touchdown to lead on the scoreboard after one, 17-14.

Early in the second quarter, Butler added to their score with a safety and a 39 yard field goal to extend their lead out to 22-14.  Coffeyville answered with a 9 yard touchdown run by freshmen Antwan Barksdale, from Topeka Kansas.  The Barksdale touchdown moved the Red Ravens to within 1 point, 21-22 at halftime.

Coffeyville struck quickly in the third quarter with sophomore quarterback Coleman Key, from Broken Arrow Oklahoma, finding sophomore receiver Terry Wright, from Memphis Tennessee, for a 70 yard touchdown pass barely ten seconds into the third quarter.  However, the extra point attempt was blocked and the Red Ravens moved ahead on the scoreboard 27-22.

Butler would come right back with a long touchdown pass (46 yards) and a long rushing touchdown (77 yards) to move back ahead 36-27.

However, the Red Ravens were not done scoring in the third quarter with quarterback Key finding Red Raven sophomore receiver Malik Stanley, from Topeka Kansas, for a 48 yard touchdown pass.  The extra point was good on this attempt to move the Red Ravens to within two points, 34-36.

The fourth quarter was marked by both team’s defenses stepping up and not allowing any further scoring.  The Red Ravens drove down into Butler territory late in the fourth quarter but an interception by the Grizzlies with 19 seconds left in the game finished off the Red Ravens.

Butler’s running back Kevon Abrams was a thorn in the Red Raven’s side all night rushing 22 carries for 254 yards.

Coffeyville’s team stats included a total of 99 yards on the ground and 190 yards through the air.

The Red Ravens have an off week this upcoming week and will return to action on September 24th with a road trip to Council Bluffs Iowa to take on the Iowa Western Reivers.  Kick-off for the game is set for 1:00 pm.
