Vic George

Running Back (1930-1931)

The first football player to be recruited by Coffeyville Junior College was Vic George from Altamont, KS.  He was an outstanding football, basketball and baseball player at Altamont High School.  He was the running back in the single wing offense that was undefeated his junior year in high school.

Vic stated, “I was fortunate to have had a good high school coach as a role model.  He taught me how to win and also how to learn from my losses.  He insisted we play hard at all times and to play by the rules.”

Although Vic was barely 17 when he graduated from high school, he had always played with older players.  The summer of his senior year he was playing baseball for the Coffeyville American Legion Team and was invited by Head Coach Lester Dillon to play for the Ravens.  They were 2-4-2 in 1930 and 3-2-1 in 1931.  Vic was the leading rusher at the running back position for the Ravens and he also started on the basketball team at the guard position.  He roomed at the home of his brother, Skeet, and worked from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the job department of The Coffeyville Journal feeding presses.

In March, 1933 while attending a baseball school in Joplin, MO, Vic was offered a contract for $125.00 a month to play for the Joplin Miners.  After four years in the minors, he signed with the Boston Bees, now the Atlanta Braves, and went to spring training in St. Petersburg, FL.  After he suffered a should injury, he became a coach at Evansville for two years and in July, 1940 became the manager of the Bradford, PA. which was in the Pony League.  After the 1940 season, Vic voluntarily retired from baseball and went to work full-time for his father at The Altamont Journal.

He married Charlotte in the fall of 1936 and their only child, Linda Louise, was born in 1942.  Vic ran The Altamont Journal, The Edna Sun, and The Mound Valley Times-Journal until 1968.  Vic also served at the same time as president of a bank in Altamont.

Vic still resides in Altamont where he spends time with his family and friends.
