Tim Pivonka

Quarterback (1975-76)

Tim Pivonka grew up in Salina where he attended South High School.  He lettered in track, basketball and football and led his team to a 7-2 record during his senior year.  Only one college recruited him to play quarterback and that was Coffeyville Community College.

Tim was the quarterback for Coach Dick Foster’s first team which posted an 11-0 record.  He spent most of that season handing off to All-American running backs Ron Springs and Mike Hollerman.  He was, however, instrumental in preserving the unbeaten string of victories in the ninth game in Garden City.  Tim threw a game-winning, 39-yard touchdown pass to Rob Fulton with 52 seconds left in the game.  He also had 220 yards total offense.  Tim was selected Honorable Mention All-Conference in 1975.

Tim started all 22 games during the 1975 and 1976 seasons leading the Ravens to a 19-3 record.  Those two years saw the Ravens return to national prominence with two Jayhawk Juco Championships and two Wool Bowl games.  The 1975 team was ranked second nationally and was the only 11-0 junior college team in the country.

Tim was selected for the Hall of Fame for his 1976 season.  In the last four games of the regular season, which saw the Ravens clinch their second straight conference championship, he accounted for 15 touchdowns, passing for eight and running for seven.  He led the conference in passing and total offense.  He was selected First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-American.

Following his career at Coffeyville, Tim graduated from Kansas State University in 1979 and the University of Missouri School of Dentistry in 1984.  He entered the Army after graduation.  He has served in Georgia, Texas, Kansas, Kentucky, and the Republic of Korea.  He was recently promoted to Colonel and is currently serving as Officer in Charge, Jordan Dental Clinic and Chief of Prosthodontics, Ft. Knox, Kentucky.

“I had a great time and learned a lot while at Coffeyville.  Coaches Foster, Luhn and my offensive linemen taught me a lot about leadership which I use in my career daily.”

Tim and his wife Meg have three children: Ryan, 24; Kate, 19; and Erin, 18.  He hopes to have his retirement assignment in Kansas to be close to relatives.  Tim likes to spend his lunchtime playing pick-up basketball, and he relaxes by playing golf and working on museum quality model airplanes.
