Poncho Sales

Linebacker (1993-94)

Poncho Sales was an outstanding player for the legendary coach Larry Garman at Pittsburg High School. He was a three-year starter and made All-State his senior year when they won the 5A State Championship.

Skip Foster said,  “Sales is the best linebacker I ever signed out of high school.” Poncho came to CCC in January 1993.

Sales had a great career at Coffeyville. His 24 tackles against Garden City in 1993 is tied for the single game record. His total of 120 blocks in 1993 is sixth on the Ravens all-time list, and his 110 tackles in 1994 ranks 11th on the list. He registered 230 total tackles in 1993-1994, which at the time was the all-time leading tackler of all Red Raven football players.

In 1993, he was selected as the outstanding freshman football player. In 1994, he received the Hall of Fame Award which was presented annually to a Player-of-the Week.

Poncho signed with Wyoming University after graduating from Coffeyville in May 1995. He transferred to Pittsburg State where he played in 1996 and 1997 as a two-year starter and all MIAA  All-Conference linebacker.

At the present time Poncho is a supervisor at a residential facility for young men. He has chosen to help young men change their lives for the better. He lives in Joplin, Missouri, where he also plays semi-pro football for the Joplin Crusaders.
