Henry Schichtle

Quarterback (1961-62)

Henry Schichtle, a Coffeyville native, graduated from Field Kindley High School where he was a standout in football, basketball, baseball and golf.  Henry was the middle son of the Schichtle brothers who were all quarterbacks and outstanding athletes in the late fifties and early sixties in southeast Kansas.

Schichtle attended the University of Hawaii for one semester before transferring to Coffeyville Community College.  He was a Red Raven for two seasons and three academic semesters.  Playing for Coach Dean Pryor, the Ravens posted a 9-2 season in 1961 and were ranked in the top ten junior college teams in the country.  Schichtle completed over 56% of his passes that year for over 1,300 yards.  The highlight of the year was a season-ending 33-6 triumph over the Wichita State University freshmen team.  Schichtle completed 17-of-29 passes for 272 yards against the Shockers.

Wichita State University decided they didn't want to chance facing Coach Pryor of Schichtle, so they recruited the coach and quarterback.  Pryor accepted a position as assistant coach on Head Coach Chelo Huerta's staff.  Schichtle and Don Boyett, the Jayhawk Juco All-Conference center, went to Wichita State with Pryor.  Schichtle really blossomed as a Shocker in 1963 when the team won seven games, lost two and tied for the Missouri Valley Conference Championship.  Henry established several season and career records at WSU, and the offense ranked nationally in every category in spite of playing one game less than all other Division I schools that year.

Schichtle was elected co-captain of the 1963 team and was voted the Most Valuable Player on the team.  He was also selected to the all Missouri Valley Conference Team and was named Honorable Mention All-American.

Schichtle was drafted in the sixth round of the National Football League by the New York Giants.  With only 14 teams in the NFL, the sixth round in 1964 is the equivalent to the third round in today's draft.  In 1981, Schichtle was inducted into the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame.

Academics always came first for Schichtle, and he graduated with honors in high school, was Phi Delta Theta member at Coffeyville Junior College, was a Cum Laude graduate and an Academic All-American at Wichita State.

Schichtle and his wife, Deb, have been married 24 years and reside in Wichita.
