Dr. Herbert George

Herbert Bill George was born June 7, 1919 in rural Gamaliel, Arkansas, the son of Luther and Bertha (Meek) George. The family moved to Oklahoma when he was four years old. He attended Pleasant Hill High School where he was active in sports and music. Following his graduation from high school in 1937, he entered East Central State College in Ada, Oklahoma, for two years. In 1939, he transferred to Oklahoma A&M, now Oklahoma State University, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, where he continued his interest in sports.

On October 14, 1940, he married Doris Lucille Gray. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1990. Mrs. George died in 1993.

Upon graduation from OSU in 1942 with a degree in animal husbandry, Herb worked for the U.S. Powder Plant in Tulsa, Oklahoma, pending entering Texas A&M. In the fall of 1943, he was inducted into the United States Army. After training in Utah, he was transferred to the Air Force in Rockford, Illinois, where he became a part of the 328th Company I Infantry Combat Team. In early 1945, he was shipped overseas and was injured in combat while in Germany. He  received the Purple Heart.

In 1946, Herb returned home to enter Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport, Iowa. After graduation in 1948 and a semester of teaching at Palmer College, Herb and his family moved to Coffeyville to set up practice. His son Curtiss joined him in that practice in 1969. Early in his career Herb had branch offices in Caney and Edna. In 1973, he and Curtiss opened a branch office in Bartlesville, Oklahoma; that office closed in 1979.

Herb was active for many years in Civil Defense, Kiwanis Club, Jaycees, Shriners and the American Legion.

He was an avid supporter of Coffeyville Community College for 47 years and served on the Board of Trustees for more than 16 years. He was on the Coffeyville Community College Foundation Board at the time of his death. He also had memberships in the Coffeyville Community College Booster Club and the Quarterback Club. He had been past vice president of the Kansas Chiropractic Association and was also a member of the Coffeyville Church of Christ for 47 years.

Dr. Herb George passed away in 1996. He is survived by one son, Dr. Curtiss W. George of Coffeyville and one daughter, Dr. Allene Knedlik of Iola.  Another son, Jeffrey N. George is deceased.
