Red Ravens End Regular Season with 2-1 Victory over #7 NJCAA Ranked KCK

Coffeyville, Kan. - The Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Women's Soccer Team completed their 2020-21 regular season with a 2-1 victory over previously undefeated Kansas City Kansas Community College Blue Devils.  With the win, the Red Ravens finish their regular season with an overall and conference record of 8-5.  The 8-5 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) record places them second in the KJCCC Division I East Division behind Kansas City Kansas Community College.

In this game, the Lady Ravens immediately put the Blue Devils under pressure and gave them no time or space to play. Once Coffeyville won the ball, they looked to get forward quickly, find the open player, and finish with a shot on goal. Their tenacity was rewarded early once they earned a corner kick. Sophomore Louise Atkinson whipped a dangerous cross into the box that the Kansas City Kansas defenders were unable to deal with. The clearance found its way to freshman Jadin Davis. Davis made perfect contact with the ball as she hit it out of the air. Jadin's shot looped up over the Blue Devils' keeper and dropped under the crossbar into the back of the net. Coffeyville, who was already dominating the match, now had a strong foothold in the game. The Lady Red Ravens stuck to their game plan and kept their shape as a team. This limited the number of chances that Kansas City Kansas would have. Sophomore Selena Zapote and freshman Emily Hannah kept the backline organized and shut down the Blue Devils' attack. Coffeyville would have more chances before the end of the first half but was unable to put another goal on the score sheet. The Lady Red Ravens took a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

The start of the second half showed why Kansas City Kansas was undefeated on the season and ranked #7 in the nation. The Blue Devils stepped up their overall team performance and kept the ball on the Lady Red Ravens' half. Coffeyville was equal to the challenge as they did not let the Blue Devils through them. Freshmen Mediatrix Masiga and Shyanne Reid were warriors for the Lady Red Ravens in the midfield. They battled for every ball, made great challenges defensively, and disrupted one of the best midfields in the country. Sophomores Savannah Hasker and Kennedy Lamp took control of the outside areas of the pitch. They were playing as fullbacks for the Lady Red Ravens and shut down any runs down the flank. Coffeyville navigated their 1-0 lead into the last ten minutes of the game. In the 80th minute, Emily Hannah found herself on the ball for a Lady Red Ravens 32-yard free-kick. The Blue Devils' keeper did well to save Hannah's shot. Emily stayed switched on and picked off the long throw from the Kansas City Kansas keeper. Hannah took one touch to control it, looked up, saw the goalkeeper off her line, and took a shot towards goal. Emily's strike was hit to perfection as it went over the keeper and landed inside the side netting of the Blue Devils' goal. With only ten minutes left, Kansas City Kansas took a gamble and threw another player into the attack. Their decision paid off as they got a goal back just 2 minutes later. Coffeyville responded well by defending as a team and clearing any chances that the Blue Devils created. The Lady Red Ravens were rewarded for their efforts with a thrilling 2-1 win over Kansas City Kansas CC.

With the win, Coffeyville finished second in the KJCCC East with an 8-5 record. As the #2 seed from the East, the Ravens will host the #3 west seeded Hutchinson Blue Dragons in the first round of the Region VI District Playoffs.  The First Round matchup is scheduled for Tuesday, May 18th at 4:00 pm in Veterans Memorial Stadium.
