Red Ravens Strike in Last Minute to Earn 1-0 Home Victory Over Johnson

Coffeyville, Kan. - On a thrilling last-minute goal, the Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Women's Soccer Team defeated the Johnson County Cavaliers 1-0.  With the victory, the Red Ravens' overall record improves to 5-3 including a 5-3 KJCCC conference mark.

Coffeyville started off the game strong, putting Johnson County under pressure immediately. The Lady Red Ravens attacked the Cavaliers' back line and forced them to defend. Coffeyville did well to win the 50/50 balls and attack Johnson down the line. Sophomores Louise Atkinson and Rachael Manley found themselves in good positions as they threatened the Johnson County defenders. The Lady Red Ravens tested the Cavaliers' goalkeeper early with quality services in from corner kicks and dangerous shots from around the 18-yard box. Johnson County's goalkeeper did well to keep the ball out of her net. Johnson County had their fair share of chances as well, but Coffeyville's backline did well to defend and keep the ball away from their goal. When the Cavaliers were able to get shots off, the Lady Red Ravens' freshman goalkeeper, Cat Burns, was there to make her saves confidently. First half finished 0-0. 
 
The Lady Red Ravens came out of halftime strong looking to pick up where they left off. Only 6 minutes into the second half, lightening caused both teams to head to the locker room for what ended up being a 45-minute break. Once the game resumed, Coffeyville showed great determination and desire by bringing the energy in search of the first goal of the game. The Lady Red Ravens continued to create chances and force the Cavaliers to stay organized. Despite dominating possession, Coffeyville was unable to find the back of the net. The Lady Red Ravens' defense kept Coffeyville in the game by clearing the ball well and breaking up any attacking chances that Johnson County created. It was an overall great team effort from the Lady Red Ravens to persevere in the rain. They were rewarded for their efforts in the final minute of the match. Coffeyville's freshman center back, Shyanne Reid, made a strong clearance in her own defensive half which sent the ball up the field inside 40-yards of Johnson County's half. Freshman Ashleigh Sweat did well to win possession and pass the ball onto sophomore Nicki Sparks. Sparks slotted the ball through to sophomore Louise Atkinson who took a great first touch towards goal. Atkinson got away from her defender, dribbled around the goalkeeper, and with the coolest of touches, slotted the ball into an empty net. That would be the deciding factor as Coffeyville ended the game with a 1-0 win over Johnson County. 
 
Next up for Coffeyville will be a road game against Dodge City Community College.  Game time is set for Saturday, May 1st at 2:00 pm.
