In Battle for KJCCC East Title, Raven Women Lose at Home to Butler 68-62

February 22, 2020

The 2020 Kansas Jayhawk Women's Division I East Conference title came down to one game played in Nellis Hall this past Saturday night.  The Red Ravens took their best shot but were not able to earn the victory and lost the game and conference title to the Butler Grizzlies 68-62.  With the loss, the Ravens place second in the seven-team 2020 KJCCC East conference standings with an overall record of 24-6 and a conference record of 14-6.

The Ravens came out fighting and had the lead at the end of the first quarter (13-8), at halftime (29-24) and at the end of the third quarter (40-35).  However, late third quarter into the fourth quarter saw Raven players Faith Simpson and Ania Markowska pick up their fourth foul each and Raven head coach Tony Turner had to sit each of them for an extended period of time.  It was during that time at the beginning of the fourth quarter that Butler gained some traction and pulled ahead of the Ravens.  Coffeyville was able to pull within on point (63-62) late in the game on a 4-point play by Raven sophomore McKenzie Murrel-Patton, but the Ravens were not able to hold the Grizzlies in the last couple of minutes and eventually lost the game 68-62.

After the game head Raven coach Tony Turner said, "I thought we played hard the whole game, but we just didn't execute down the stretch.  I am very proud of these young ladies."

Top players in the loss for Coffeyville were Faith Simpson (17 points and 8 rebounds), McKenzie Murrel-Patton (12 points) and Alana Kramer (12 points and 6 rebounds).
