Most Wins Ever in a Season, Ravens Earn 16th Win of Year with 7-2 Defeat of Garden City

Coffeyville, Kan. - In an opening-round NJCAA District playoff matchup, the #10 NJCAA ranked Coffeyville Community College Men's Soccer Team defeated the Broncbusters of Garden City 7-2.  With the victory, the Red Ravens overall record moves to 16-1-1.  The current 16 wins for the 2021 Raven team breaks the program record for wins in a season.  The previous record of 15 wins was held by both the 2011 and 2013 teams.

Coffeyville wasted no time getting on the scoresheet. Just two minutes into the match, sophomore Nicolaus Stoddart made a great run inside the 18-yard box. Stoddart took one touch to control the ball, then struck it with venom past the Garden City goalkeeper. It took the Red Ravens just 4 minutes to score their second goal. Sophomore Daniel Gomes threaded the needle with a beautiful through ball to sophomore Pedro Branco who made a great run in behind the Broncbusters' backline. Branco controlled the ball with a clinical first touch, then slotted the ball into the back of the net.

Garden City would get a goal back to make it 2-1, but the Red Ravens responded well by netting another goal to make it 3-1. Gomes was pulling the strings in the midfield again when he found sophomore Zedan Mutlu in behind the Broncbusters' backline. Mutlu took a great couple of touches to set himself for a clinical finish past Garden City's goalkeeper. The Red Ravens were not done yet. Sophomore Pedro Branco sent in a beautiful cross that found the head of fellow sophomore, Tiago Dias, who smashed the ball into the back of the net with a powerful header. Coffeyville would go into the break with a commanding 4-1 lead.

Freshman, Rhys Thompson, started off the scoring for the Red Ravens in the second half. Thompson was alert when a weak back pass was made by the Garden City defender. Thompson intercepted the pass, took a touch around the keeper, and passed the ball into the empty net. Thompson used the momentum from his first goal to score the 6th goal of the match. Freshman Imanol Aranburu found Thompson in a great pocket of space just outside of the Broncbusters' 18-yard box. Thompson made a great turn and hit a vigorous strike that the Garden City keeper had no chance of saving. Thompson would earn his hat trick in the 62 minute off another Aranburu assist. Thompson found himself one on one with the Broncbuster goalkeeper. The keeper made a great first save but Thompson was quick to the rebound to head the ball into an empty net.

Thompson's hat trick wrapped up the scoring for Coffeyville on the night. The final score would finish 7-2 to the Red Ravens. This match proved to be an impressive team performance that featured every player on the Coffeyville squad

The #10 Red Ravens now look towards their NJCAA Region VI Semi-Final at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, KS on Thursday, November 4th. Coffeyville will face Neosho County CC with the kick-off set at 1:30 pm.
