Men's Soccer Defeat Neosho 3-0, Remain Undefeated to Start Season

Chanute, Kan. - The Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Men's Soccer Team continued their hot streak to start their season with a road 3-0 victory over the Neosho Panthers.  With the victory, the Red Ravens improved their 2021 overall record to a perfect 4-0 including a 3-0 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) record.  The 3-0 KJCCC record has the Ravens sitting atop the KJCCC East standings.

The Red Ravens came out of the gate flying in Chanute as they scored their first goal just 15 seconds into the match. Sophomore Nicolaus Stoddart found a great pocket of space to receive the ball, he took a great first touch to turn his defender and slot in a dangerous ball to freshman Antonio Podstwaski. Podstwaski attacked the goal, his shot was deflected, and found the feet of sophomore Zedan Mutlu. Mutlu's shot on goal was saved by the Panthers' goalkeeper and the rebound fell to sophomore Aleksandar Mihaylov. Mihaylov made no mistake with his chance as he buried the ball into the back of the net.

After their first goal, Coffeyville continued to move the ball around the pitch, create chances, and force Neosho's backline to stay deep in their own half. When the Panthers did win the ball back, they looked to go forward right away to find the equalizer. The Red Ravens stayed organized and limited Neosho's chances on goal. Coffeyville's tenacity on offense was rewarded with a second goal in the 36th minute.

The Red Ravens built up the play beautifully from the back. The ball eventually made its way to the feet of freshman Rhys Thompson. Thompson took a great first touch towards the goal and found himself one on one with the Panthers' goalkeeper. He squared the ball across the face of the goal to Podstwaski who tapped the ball into an empty net for his second goal of the season.

Just 6 minutes later, sophomore Daniel Gomes drove the ball through the heart of Neosho's midfield and found freshman Richie Bailey for a quick 1,2 pass. After receiving a great lay-off from Bailey, Gomes struck the ball first time with a beautiful curler that flew past Neosho's goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Coffeyville went into halftime up 3-0 after an impressive first-half performance.

The Cougars had some belief coming out of the break that they could find a way back into the game. Coffeyville quickly crushed Neosho's hope by being aggressive on defense, staying organized as a unit, and holding onto possession well. The Red Ravens moved the ball around the pitch well and confidently took control of the match. The Cougars made personnel changes and adjusted their tactics with hopes of getting a goal back. However, Coffeyville adjusted well and continued to be the better team. The Red Ravens would continue to create chances but were ultimately unable to add another goal to their tally. The Cougars' frustrations started to build up as they began to commit late fouls and try to get in the head of the Red Ravens. Coffeyville showed their professionalism and maturity throughout the second half by not responding to any of the antics. The Red Ravens completed another impressive shutout as the game finished with a 3-0 score in favor of Coffeyville.

Coffeyville's next test will be against the Garden City Community College Broncbusters. The Ravens will host the Broncbusters for their KJCCC match-up on Saturday, September 11 with kick-off scheduled for 1 pm.
