Red Ravens Men's Soccer Remain Unbeaten, Defeat #16 Barton 1-0

Great Bend, Kan. - The Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Men's Soccer Team defeated the #16 NJCAA ranked Barton Cougars in a close 1-0 match.  With the victory, the Red Ravens stay unbeaten at 3-0 including an early 2-0 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) record.  The 2-0 KJCCC mark has the Red Ravens sitting atop the KJCCC Div I East conference standings.

Coffeyville started the game strongly, dominating possession and creating chances on offense. The first big chance the Red Ravens had came off a set-piece just three minutes into the game. Sophomore Aleksandar Mihaylov curled in a dangerous ball into Barton's 18-yard box. After the Cougars made the first clearance, sophomore Tahj Hilton headed the ball back towards goal to force a smart save from Barton's goalkeeper.

The next big opportunity for the Red Ravens came in the 11th minute. Sophomore Daniel Gomes crossed in a great ball off a corner kick that found sophomore Tiago Dias' head. It was a powerful header on target that forced the Barton goalkeeper to make a great save. The game continued to go back and forth with Coffeyville holding the majority of possession.

In the 39th minute, the Red Ravens scored the opening goal of the match. Sophomore Nicolaus Stoddart picked up the ball in the midfield, took a positive touch forward, and slotted a perfect through ball into the path of freshman Antonio Podstwaski. The Cougars' goalkeeper came out to try and make a save but Podstwaski slotted the ball past him with the coolest of finishes. Coffeyville saw the remainder of the first half out to enter halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Barton made adjustments coming out the half and this helped them deal with Coffeyville's pressure and attack.

Sophomore goalkeeper Cuba Grant did not have much action, but when he was called upon, he made two fantastic saves. The second half was extremely physical and saw both teams commit many fouls. Coffeyville defended well and limited Barton's chances on goal.

As the second half progressed and the score remained 1-0 for the Red Ravens, the Cougars made more substitutions hoping for a spark. Coffeyville remained compact defensively which made it hard for Barton to breakthrough. Once the Red Ravens won the ball back, they were dangerous on the counter-attack which forced the Cougars not to commit as many players forward as they would have liked to. Antonio Podstwaski's goal in the 39th minute would prove to be the game-winner as the Red Ravens completed a shutout against #16 ranked Barton Community College.

Coffeyville shifts their attention to a KJCCC East road match against the Panthers of Neosho County on Wednesday, September 8th. Coffeyville will be looking to maintain their first-place standing in the conference.  Kick-off is scheduled in Chanute Kansas at 7:30 pm on the 8th.
