Red Ravens Comeback Falls Short, Pirates Score Late FG to Defeat Ravens 24-21

Independence, Kan. - The Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Football Team scored 14 points in the fourth quarter on their way to a comeback bid, but the Pirates of Independence Community College kicked a 34-yard field goal with just 14 seconds remaining in the game to seal the 24-21 victory for Independence.  With the loss, the Red Ravens fell to 0-3 to start the season.

The Pirates opened up the scoring with a long 55-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kai Kunz to Tobias Burrell just five minutes into the game. The point after was good and Independence had an early 7-0.   Just five minutes into the second quarter, Indy again struck through the air with a 38-yard touchdown pass from Kunz to Isaiah Myers.  The extra point was again good and Indy led 14-0 with 10:49 remaining in the second quarter.  Just four minutes later, Indy added more points to the scoreboard by way of a long 50-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Kavion Martin to give the Pirates a 21-0 lead at the 6:28 mark of the second quarter.

Coffeyville was able to add to their side of the scoreboard on their next possession as Red Raven freshman running back Omiri Wiggins ripped off a 75-yard touchdown run to pull Coffeyville within 21-7 at halftime.

The third quarter had both teams going back and forth with neither team able to score.  The Ravens opened the fourth quarter with Wiggins scoring his second touchdown of the game, this time through the air as Raven quarterback Enzo Tedesco flipped a 6-yard touchdown pass to bring Coffeyville within 21-14 at the 13:10 mark of the fourth quarter.   Coffeyville completed their comeback as Wiggins scored his third touchdown of the game on a 4-yard touchdown run.  The extra point was good and Ravens and Pirates were tied 21-21 with 5:30 left to play in the game.

Independence received the kick-off and went on to rattle off a 12-play 70-yard drive capped off by a 34-yard field goal to take the 24-21 lead.  More importantly, the drive lasted a little over five minutes and only left the Ravens 11 seconds left with the ball.  The Ravens' chances ended when a long downfield pass was intercepted by Independence.

Omiri Wiggins led Coffeyville offensively by rushing for 130 yards on 14 carries with 3 total touchdowns. 

Coffeyville will have an open weekend this week and then will regroup as they head to the #1 ranked Hutchinson Blue Dragons on Saturday, September 23rd.  Kick-off in Hutchinson is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
