#11 Red Ravens Fall at Home 18-5 to the #RV Independence Pirates

Coffeyville, Kan. - In the latest installment of the Montgomery County Battle, the Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Football Team lost at home to the Pirates of Independence Community College 18-5.  With their first loss of the season, the Red Ravens fall to a 2-1 overall record as well as a 2-1 KJCCC record.

Coffeyville came into this game as the higher ranked team with the Red Ravens ranked #11 in the latest NJCAA rankings and the Pirates just outside the rankings but listed as receiving votes.

Independence scored first late in the first quarter with a 43-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead at the 4:51 mark of the opening stanza.

A couple of minutes later after the Ravens punt team pinned the Pirates inside their own five-yard line, Coffeyville's defense pushed Indy's offense back into the endzone for a two-point safety.  The score at the end of the first quarter was a baseball-esque 3-2 in favor of the Pirates.

After a defensive battle for most of the second quarter, the Red Ravens used the brisk north wind to their favor as Coffeyville's sophomore placekicker Forrest Taylor tacked on an all-time program record 57-yard field goal as the quarter was winding down to give the Red Ravens the 5-3 halftime lead.

The Ravens seemed to have the momentum going their way as they headed into halftime, however, the second half turned out to be all Pirates.

The Coffeyville offense came out and seemed to fall into quicksand for most of the second half while Independence added two touchdowns (with a missed XP on the first) in the final half of the game along with a safety of their own to post the final 18-5 score.

Offensively, Independence outgained Coffeyville as the Pirates posted 370 yards of total offense while the Ravens had 228.  The Pirates got 198 of those yards on the ground compared to Coffeyville's 90 yards.

Coffeyville has a week off to regroup after which they will be hosting the #2 ranked Hutchinson Blue Dragons on Saturday, Sept 24th with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 pm in Veterans Memorial Stadium.
