Red Raven Football Starts Season With a Dominating 37-0 Victory Over Highland

Coffeyville, Kan. - On a beautiful August evening in Veterans Memorial Stadium, The Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Football Team began their 2022 season with a dominating 37-0 defeat of the Scotties of Highland Community College.  With the victory, the Red Ravens move to 1-0 on the young season.

The Red Ravens opened up the scoring on the 2022 season with a blocked Highland punt that rolled out of the end zone to give Coffeyville an early 2-0 at the 10:30 minute mark of the first quarter.  

Towards the end of the first quarter, Coffeyville found the end zone for the season's first touchdown with a 9-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Isaiah Velez to sophomore receiver Mario Sanchez.  Red Raven sophomore kicker Forrest Taylor made the extra point and the Ravens were off to a 9-0 lead at the 2:22 mark of the first quarter.

Just a few minutes later, Coffeyville capped off a 7-play, 58-yard drive with Raven quarterback Isaiah Velez scrambling for a 16-yard touchdown.  Taylor was good on the extra point and the Ravens pushed ahead 16-0 at 13:30 of the second quarter.

Coffeyville mounted a back-breaking drive to put a bow on the first half by going 83 yards on 5 plays ending with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Velez to Raven freshman receiver Joseph Young.  Coffeyville scored with just 16 seconds left in the first half and went into halftime with a 23-0 lead.

The Ravens came out of halftime and quickly added to the scoreboard scoring on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Velez to freshman receiver Keishawn Qualls to put Coffeyville up 30-0 at the 12:06 mark of the third quarter.

The last score of the game came late in the fourth quarter as Red Raven sophomore running back Jacqez Barksdale took the hand-off and steamrolled ahead for a 2-yard touchdown run to give the Ravens an exhilarating 37-0 victory over Highland to start the season.

For the game, Coffeyville's offense pushed forward for a total of 382 total yards of offense, 295 yards through the air, and 87 yards on the ground.  Offensive leaders for the Red Ravens included quarterback Isaiah Velez who was 24-34 through the air for 289 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Velez also rushed for 30 yards and a touchdown.  Receiver Joseph Young had a game-high 98 yards receiving on 5 catches.  The top rusher for Coffeyville on the day was sophomore running back Romal Webb who rushed 8 times for 38 yards.  Ten different players posted a reception for the Red Ravens in the game.

Defensively, the Ravens allowed Highland to gain a poultry 130 yards of offense.  Red Raven sophomore linebacker Timirance Adams posted 5 total tackles in the game including a team-high 3 solo tackles and an interception he returned 30 yards to lead the Ravens on defense.

The only aspect that the Ravens may need to clean up going forward were the penalties.  Coffeyville was flagged 19 times for a total of 164 yards.

Coffeyville will return to action this coming Saturday, September 3rd as they travel out to Dodge City Kansas to take on the Conquistadors of Dodge City Community College.  Game time in Dodge City is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
