#10 Red Ravens Fall to #7 Indy in Last Game of Spring Season

Coffeyville, Kan. - The #10 NJCAA ranked Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Football Team fell to #7 Independence Pirates 19-16.  With the loss, the Red Ravens end their unusual Spring season with an overall record of 3-3.  The 3-3 record placed them fourth in the eight-team Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) standings.

The Ravens found themselves down early, giving up a touchdown and two field goals to the Pirates in the first half to go into halftime down 12-0.  However, the game turned in the second half with the Ravens offense finally coming alive to make a game of it.

The Ravens climbed onto the scoreboard at the 11:00 minute mark of the third quarter with a 51 yard run by redshirt freshman running back Courtney Jackson.  Freshman kicker Skyler Seagraves extra point was good and Coffeyville had pulled within five at 12-7.

A little later, at the 8:47 mark of the fourth quarter, Seagraves tacked on a 29-yard field goal to pull even closer at 12-10.

Veterans stadium really got rocking at the 5:57 mark of the fourth period when Independence fumbled inside their five-yard line and Red Raven freshman linebacker Jhalyn Shuler scooped up the fumble and scored.  Coffeyville went for the two-point conversion and was not able to convert, but with the touchdown pulled ahead on the scoreboard 16-12.

However, the lead was short-lived.  Within 50 seconds of the ensuing kick-off, Independence ripped off a 57-yard rushing touchdown to pull back ahead 19-16.

The Ravens did get the ball back with 55 seconds remaining and in Independence territory however, the Ravens were not able to find pay dirt.  Coffeyville gave up a sack on the last play of the game as the time seemed to tick off but was stopped with two seconds remaining.  The referees of the game had about a ten-minute conference with the clock showing 2 seconds remaining and then came out of their conference and announced that time should have run off and that the game was over.

Coffeyville had the 19-16 loss to Independence.

On the statistical side, Indy's offense outgained the Ravens 426 yards to 232.  The Ravens also gave up eight sacks for -57 yards.  Coffeyville did only have one turnover (an interception) where the Pirates lost two fumbles.

Coffeyville, and all of NJCAA football, will have a quick turnaround as the 2021 NJCAA Football season will start as normal in just a few months.
