Ravens Score 9-8 Walk-Off Victory vs Butler

Coffeyville, Kan. - On a windy afternoon, the Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Baseball Team hosted the Grizzlies of Butler Community College in a single 9-inning afternoon game.  The Red Ravens got the last laugh on the Grizzlies as the Ravens scored the winning run in walk-off fashion with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to drive in the winning run in a 9-8 victory.  With the victory, the Red Ravens improve their 2022 overall record to 18-15 which includes a 9-11 record in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) East competition.  The 9-11 KJCCC East record has Coffeyville currently in fifth place in the nine-team division.

In a back and forth contest, Butler jumped on top first with a two-run homer in the second inning to take a 2-0 early lead.  The Grizzlies tacked on a third run in the third inning to go up 3-0 on the Ravens.   

Coffeyville broke onto the scoreboard in the fourth with RBI singles by freshman first baseman Jackson Mannix and sophomore center fielder AJ Craft along with a ground out RBI by sophomore second baseman Korben Ford to knot up the score at 3-3 after four innings.

Butler jumped back in front in the fifth inning, scoring another three runs with the bulk of the damage done by another two-run home run to take a 6-3 lead.

The Ravens plated a single run in the fifth inning with AJ Craft notching his second RBI of the game on a fielder's choice.  The run pulled Coffeyville within two at 6-4.

In the sixth, Coffeyville's sophomore shortstop Orlando Gonzalez decided to hop on the home run bandwagon himself with a two-run home run over the left-field fence to tie up the game at 6-6.  Later in the bottom of the sixth, the Ravens took their first lead of the game off of a Jackson Mannix's RBI double that pushed the score to 7-6 in favor of the Ravens after six.

Orlando Gonzalez added to his RBI total in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single to extend the Raven lead out to 8-6 after seven.

The Grizzlies of Butler regained tied the game up with single runs in the top of the eighth and ninth innings to tie the game at 8-8 heading to the bottom of the ninth.

The bottom of the ninth started with Raven freshman right fielder Brady Claypool working an inning opening walk.  Freshman Kolby Adams then came into the game to pinch run for Claypool at first.  Adam was able to advance to second and then to third on two straight groundouts to the Butler pitcher.  The Red Raven sophomore designated hitter Austin Gonzales then calmly lined a two-out RBI single to left field to score the walk-off 9-8 victory.

On the day, Coffeyville used a total of seven pitchers with sophomore righty Jayden Quarles working the last three innings to earn the victory.

Orlando Gonzalez and Jackson Mannix powered the offense for Coffeyville each going 3 for 5 at the plate with three RBIs for Gonzalez and two for Mannix.

Coffeyville will return to KJCCC East action on Thursday, April 14th as they will travel to Iola KS to play the Red Devils of Allen Community College in an afternoon doubleheader.  Game times at Allen are set for 1:00 & 3:00.
