Raven Baseball Splits Four Game Series with Hutchinson

The Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Baseball Team split a Thursday/Saturday four-game series with the Hutchinson Blue Dragons.  Coffeyville hosted a doubleheader with Hutchinson on Thursday, March 4th, and then Hutchinson hosted a doubleheader with Coffeyville on Saturday, March 6th.  The visiting team won each of the games.  Hutchinson beat Coffeyville at Walter Johnson Park 12-3 and 10-8 in the Thursday double.  Coffeyville then returned the favor and defeated the Blue Dragons in Hutchinson 10-8 and 22-7 in the Saturday doubleheader.

Splitting the four-game series moves the Red Ravens overall record to 3-3 on the season.

Game 1 - Coffeyville, Kan. - 12-3 Loss

Game #1 saw the Blue Dragons jump out early on the Ravens building a 5-1 lead after two innings.  The Blue Dragons went on to score in every inning of the seven-inning game except for the sixth inning to get the 12-3 victory over the Ravens.

The Ravens managed 5 hits in the game with sophomore Luis Mendoza pounding out 2 of the 5.

Game 2 - Coffeyville, Kan. - 10-8 Loss

Game #2 saw a back and forth contest with each team scoring to take the lead over multiple innings.  The Ravens were able to score 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of the nine-inning game to tie the game at 8-8.  However, the Blue Dragons scored 2 runs in the top of the 8th inning to push the score to 10-8 and the Ravens were not able to get any more runs in the eighth or ninth innings.  Hutchinson grabbed the 10-8 victory.

For the Ravens, sophomore Luis Mendoza and freshman Jayden Kay both had home runs in the game.  Coffeyville used 5 different pitchers in the game.  As a staff, the Ravens allowed 10 runs (7 earned) on 12 hits.

Game 3 - Hutchinson, Kan. - 10-8 Win

Coffeyville was able to get their first victory of the series by scoring 5 runs in the top of the 5th inning to power the Ravens to the 10-8 seven-inning victory over the Blue Dragons.

Sophomore Luis Mendoza hit a home run and drove in 4 runs in the game along with freshmen Adriel Mendoza-Lopez and Austin Gonzales both hitting doubles for the Ravens offensive punch.  Redshirt freshman right-hander Kade Peterson got the no-decision, however, he pitched 4 strong innings allowing one hit and 3 earned runs on 3 strikeouts and 5 walks.

Game 4 - Hutchinson, Kan - 22-7 Win

The seven-inning game saw the Ravens trailing 6-7 heading into the top of the seventh.  Could the Ravens get a couple of runs to earn the victory?  How about posting 16! runs in the top of the seventh to earn the 22-7 victory to close out the series.  In just the top of the seventh inning, the Ravens sent 21 batters to the plate.  Those 21 batters scored 16 runs on 11 hits with three walks, two errors, and two hit batsmen.

Red-shirt right-hand freshman Tayler Mahoney started the game on the mound for the Ravens.  Mahoney pitched 4 innings, allowing 2 earned on 5 hits with 4 strikeouts and 6 walks in the no-decision.

The Red Ravens were scheduled to return to action later this week with a four-game home and away series against Highland, however, all four of those games have been postponed.

Currently, Coffeyville's next contest is scheduled for March 18th doubleheader at home against the Neosho County Panthers.
