Golf 1977-79

 

Steve Gomez grew up in Topeka, Kansas, and attended Highland Park High School. He was a three-sport letterman; participated in Cross Country, Basketball and Golf, excelling in golf. Gomez earned 38 medals and was a runner up in his senior year in the State Finals.  While participating in State Finals, Steve met Frank Ortaloni, Coffeyville Community College Golf Coach, and was offered a golf scholarship to CCC. 
 
Gomez came to CCC in 1977. He made the first team in his freshman year and was medalist in four events and was named conference player of the year. It was the first time a freshman had been named player of the year in the Jayhawk Conference. 
 
He returned to CCC for his sophomore year and won five events and again received conference player of the year. He was the only player to have earned this title back to back.
 
Gomez set a 27 hole scoring record in the Garden City Buffalo Dunes Classic with a 104. He was also a medalist in the regional in Midland, Texas, and earned All-American Honor that year, averaging 71.25 his sophomore year.  He became class president during his second year and graduated in 1979 with an Associate Degree. 
 
After attending Tulsa University on a scholarship Steve moved to Houston, TX for nine years. While in Texas he earned membership to the Space Coast Tower. 
 
After moving back to Topeka in 1980 he continued to play golf, winning a record 15 city titles and was the record holder of the City Stoke Play, scoring at 9 under par. He remained the record holder for 16 years. 
 
Leaving Kansas, Gomez moved to Austin, Texas, and worked in the car business for Ford Motor Company. While living in Austin he won the Austin Texas Mid-Amateur title. 
 
He is currently living in Topeka and continues to compete in area tournaments. He qualified for the Ozark Challenge to represent Kansas versus Missouri in Senior Golf. Steven has won 9 senior series tour events and has a 38-8 record in the Kansas cup match play series.
 
After retiring from the car business Steve stills plays competitive golf every summer. His brother Mark was recently inducted into the CCC Hall of Fame with the 1978-79 Football Team.  Gomez says he “will always be a Red Raven for life!”
