
Coffeyville, Kan. - It is how you start and also how you finish, the Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Women's Basketball Team started strong and then needed a strong finish as they knocked off the #22 NJCAA ranked Butler Grizzlies 68-60. With the victory, the Red Ravens' overall record improves to 8-3 including a 4-1 record in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) games. The 4-1 conference record has the Red Ravens currently tied for second in the thirteen-team KJCCC Division I league.
Coffeyville jumped into the first quarter with a hot start racing out to a 17-4 lead over the Grizzlies midway through the first quarter. Butler closed a little late in the quarter but Coffeyville maintained a 21-13 lead going into the second quarter.
Quarters two and three went to the Grizzlies as they outscored the Ravens 36-28. The teams headed into the fourth quarter with the overall score knotted up 49-49.
This is where that strong finish comes into play. The strong start kept Coffeyville in the game, but a strong finish which included a 9-0 run by the Ravens, as well as stiffling defense by Coffeyville that only allowed the Grizzlies to score a total of 5 points over the last six minutes of the game, earned the 68-60 victory for the Red Ravens.
Sophomore forward Jordynn Conner was the spark plug for Coffeyville on the night scoring 23 points on 10/13 shooting. Conner pulled down 9 rebounds missing out on the double-double by just one board. Freshman guard Kyleigh Ortiz went 5/12 from behind the arc to pitch in 15 points while sophomore Kennady Roach contributed 14 points along with 8 rebounds. Freshman point guard Tetona Woods-Blackowl led the team with 9 assists.
Coffeyville will face their second NJCAA-ranked opponent in a row as they will face #17 Barton on Saturday, December 3rd in Nellis Hall. Tip-off against Barton is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
