Coffeyville, Kan. - The #6 seeded Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Women's Basketball Team came out quickly in the first round of the Region VI/KJCCC playoffs defeating the #11 seeded Mavericks of Northwest Kansas Technical College 79-60.
The Red Ravens were strong throughout the game, outscoring the Mavericks in every quarter. Coffeyville shot 48% (27/56) for the game including 36 % (9/25) from behind the three-point line. The Ravens also outrebounded the Mavericks (44-20), won the points off of turnovers (17-13) as well as bench points (18-9).
The story in this one, however, was Raven sophomore center Faith Simpson. Simpson scorched the Mavericks of NW KS Tech for a career-high 41 points in the game. The 41 points bested her previous career-high of 37 she scored last year in a game versus Garden City. For those wondering, Coffeyville's individual game scoring record is 49 points held by April Jean set during the 2000-01 season. Simpson scored the 41 points on 15/21 shooting and 11/15 free throws. With her 41 points, Simpson also grabbed 12 rebounds to post the 41/12 double/double.
Other contributors on the night for Coffeyville included freshman guard Amiya Josey with 11 points and freshman Martina Aeschliman with 8 points. Sophomore guard Kaylin Lay set the table all night for Simpson dishing out a big 10 assists.
The #6 seeded Coffeyville will move into the second round of Region VI/KJCCC Championships where they will play at #3 seeded Barton Community College. The second-round games are scheduled for Wednesday, April 7th. The game time in Barton has not been determined as of this writing.
