
Coffeyville, Kan. - Herkelman keeps adding to his total. In the latest Montgomery County clash, the Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Men's Basketball Team defeated the Independence Pirates 63-54. With the victory, Coffeyville Head coach Jay Herkelman notched his 700th victory. In total, NJCAA Hall-of-Famer Jay Herkelman's career record now currently stands at 700-207 for a .772 win percentage.
The 700th victory was marked by a game that had some wild swings in it. The Pirates of Indy bolted out of the gates early in the contest sinking some early shots to take a 15-8 lead over the Ravens midway through the first half. However, over the next 15 minutes of game time, the Red Ravens came alive outscoring the Pirates 26-7 in that span to take a 34-22 lead at the 15:00 mark of the second half. The Ravens continued the pressure and pushed the lead out to 51-33 with six minutes to go in the game.
Indy did make a run to close the game, pulling within seven points at 59-52 with just over a minute to play in the game. However, the Ravens were able to close the game out for the 63-54 victory.
Coffeyville had three players in double figures with sophomore guard Love Bettis leading the way with 22 points. Sophomore Deng Mayer just missed out on the double-double with 11 points and 9 rebounds. Red Raven sophomore guard AJ McBride had 10 points.
Coffeyville will look to win #701 for Herkelman as they play next against the Thunderbirds of Cloud County at home in Nellis Hall on Monday, February 14th. The Valentine's day tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
A 700th win presentation for Coach Herkelman will be held just prior to tip-off.
