Wendell Davis

Defensive Back (1991-92)

Wendell Davis is from Wichita, and he graduated from Wichita North High School.  He was an outstanding football player, playing linebacker, and was selected 1st Team All City.  Wendell also ran track for the North High Indians, again being selected 1st Team All City.  He placed 2nd in the 4X100 relay, 3rd in the 400 meters, and 3rd in the 4X400 relay.  His high school coach, Larry Becker, was a big influence and positive mentor in his life.

Wendell began his college career at CCC, attending summer school in 1991.  He went through the summer workout program for the fall football season. Wendell started at cornerback and played on all of the specialty teams for the Ravens while starting every game in 1991 and 1992.  He graduated with an Associate in Arts degree in December 1992.  Chris Ball was CCC’s secondary coach at the time, and Rich Giesen, the defensive coordinator.  Coach Giesen was most instrumental in recruiting Wendell to attend CCC.   He worked very closely with him as the strength and conditioning coordinator.  Wendell was selected 1st team All Jayhawk Conference and honorable mention All-American by the NJCAA in 1992.

Wendell enrolled at the University of Oklahoma in January 1992.  He played nickel back both his junior and senior years under then Head Coach Gary Gibbs.  He played well enough for the Sooners that the Dallas Cowboys drafted him in the NFL’s sixth round in 1996.  He continued playing nickel back and backed up at both corners for the Cowboys.  He played extensively from 1996 to 1998.  For his efforts on the Cowboys’ specialty teams, Wendell was selected by John Madden for his exceptional toughness and effort with a select group of NFL players.  Wendell suffered a season-ending knee injury during the 1998 season.  He went to the Washington Redskins in 1999, was released, and went back to Dallas.  He finished the 1998 and 1999 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, ending his four-year career and playing in a total of 34 games.

In 2000, Wendell was drafted as the 134th player by the San Francisco Demons of the XFL in their inaugural draft.  He played all 10 games in the XFL’s only season, finishing with 21 tackles and 1 interception.  He went to training camp that same year with the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders.

Wendell joined the Arena Football League in 2002, where he won two Arena Bowl Championships with the San Jose Sabercats in 2002 and again in 2004.  He started as a defensive back his first three seasons.  In 2005, he played the first eight games with the Grand Rapids Rampage and returned to San Jose to play his last eight games of that season.  Wendell finished his football career in 2006, playing for the Arizona Rattlers.

Wendell has been very supportive of the Red Raven football program in recruiting and encouraging young players to attend CCC.  In 2006, Wendell rejoined his high school coach, Craig Broadbent, who has been a tremendous influence in his life and has helped him get into coaching in Wichita. Wendell coached at his alma mater, North High School, in 2006, and coached at Maize High School in 2007 and 2008.  He and his wife Tisha have a son Jackson, who was born in 2008.
