Red Raven Football Falls to 0-5 with Home Loss to Highland

It has been almost 50 years since the Coffeyville Red Raven football team started a season 0-5, but that is where they find themselves after a 38-12 home defeat at the hands of the Scotties of Highland Community College.  The loss moves the Red Ravens to 0-5 on the season and 0-3 in KJCCC play.  The last Red Raven team to start 0-5 was the 1970 team that went 1-9, interestingly enough, the one win that season came against the Independence Pirates.

The 2019 version of the Red Raven football team started the game against Highland in good fashion, scoring the first touchdown of the game early in the first quarter on a sophomore running back Marco Lee 4 yard rushing touchdown to take the early lead 7-0.

The Scotties scored next on a wild sequence of plays that saw Highland block a Red Raven punt with Highland's Jam'l Dillard scooping and scoring for a 2 yard touchdown.  The Red Ravens, however, were able to block the PAT with Coffeyville sophomore Dailon Gants returning the blocked PAT for 2 points for the Red Ravens.  After the dust settled and with 7:00 remaining in the first quarter, Coffeyville still held a 9-6 lead.

The remainder of the first half saw the Red Ravens outscored 28-3 with Highland scoring on two long touchdown drives (12 plays 86 yards and 8 plays 88 yards) combined with two big plays (a 50 yard touchdown pass and a 32 yard touchdown run).

The second quarter scoring frenzy by Highland saw the Scotties take the halftime lead of  34-12.

The second half of the game did see the Red Raven defense play better, not allowing the Scotties a single point.  However, Coffeyville's offense was only able to muster a late 10 yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Edwin Kleipeter to freshmen receiver Logan Clarke.

The game ended with the final score of  34-18 in favor of  Highland.

Statistically, the Red Ravens had 258 yards (168 rushing and 90 yards passing) of offense to Highland's 445 (83 rushing and 362 passing).

Coffeyville will look to get their first win this week as they travel to Little Rock Arkansas to play Arkansas Baptist College.  The game is set for September 28th, with a 1:00 pm start.
