CCC Football Falls Short in Season Opener

CCC Football Falls Short in Season Opener

Coffeyville opened their season at home against the Iowa Western Reivers who came into the contest preseason ranked number two in the NJCAA. The first quarter was an absolute battle in the trenches for both teams. The two football teams only combined for 97 yard and there was an interception by Red Raven cornerback McArthur Bennett. The first quarter ended in a 0-0 tie.

The Reivers came out firing in the second quarter though scoring in the first minute on an eight-yard pass from Reivers quarterback T.J. Starks to wide receiver Javonte' Richardson. The Ravens offense continued their plan of pounding the ball with their stable of running backs throughout the second quarter, but failed to punch it in the end zone. The defense held up their end of the bargain by getting many big stops, including forcing a fumble with the Reivers on the three yard line with less than a minute to go in the first half. Though it originally looked like the Red Ravens came up with the fumble the referees awarded it to Iowa Western where they took advantage and kicked a field goal to make it 10-0 Iowa Western going into halftime.

A touchdown and a missed extra point by The Reivers put the game at 16-0 at the 10-minute mark in the third quarter. A quick strike from Carson Proctor to Andre Thomas-Cobb on a 70-yard pass put the game at 16-6. A failed extra point left the score at exactly that. Iowa Western tacked on to their lead with a 39-yard field goal by Hunter Pinegar.

The score stayed the same throughout the fourth quarter and Coffeyville dropped to 0-1 on the season. Next week The Ravens will be back in action at Fort Scott Saturday September 1st at 7 pm.
