Red Ravens Pull Away in 4th quarter for first Win of Season!

Sept 3, 2016

Iowa Falls, Iowa

The Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Football team defeated the Ellsworth Community College Panthers, 55-24.

The 55-24 final score is a little deceptive as the score at the end of the third quarter was a tight 27-24 with the Red Ravens holding onto a slim three point lead.  However, with four straight touchdowns to close out the game, the Red Ravens evened their season record to 1-1.

Red Raven defensive back Willie Hobdy, sophomore from Garland Texas, quickly got the momentum moving in Coffeyville's direction with an interception on the fourth play of the game.  Hobdy's interception gift wrapped great field position for the Red Ravens, the 50 yard line.  Nine plays later the Red Ravens broke onto the scoreboard with Cooper Lee, reigning NJCAA special teams player of the week, hitting a 22 yard field goal to get the Ravens an early 3-0 lead.

Coffeyville's defense was excellent early in the first quarter, forcing a 4 play punt from Ellsworth.  On the ensuing offensive possession, Red Raven Marcelus Ware, sophomore running back from St. Petersburg Florida, took a handoff and broke a 45 yard run for a touchdown to extend Coffeyville's lead to 10-0, with just barely six minutes having ticked off the clock to start the game.

On their next possession, the Panthers from Ellsworth got their passing game going with 3 passes of 37, 12, and 21 yards to set up a 6 yard rushing touchdown.  The Panther score cut the Raven lead down to 3, 10-7.

Late in the first quarter, after both teams traded non-scoring possessions, the Red Ravens extended their lead on a 14 yard touchdown pass from Red Raven sophomore quarterback Coleman Key, from Broken Arrow Oklahoma, to sophomore wide receiver Malik Stanley, from Topeka Kansas.  The score moved the Red Raven's lead out to 10 points, 17-7.

To start the second quarter, the Red Raven defense would bend but did not break by allowing the Panthers to move to the Coffeyville 24 yard line.  However, Red Raven sophomore linebacker Vernon Dasher, from Baxley Georgia, broke up a Panther pass on 4th down and 5 to get the ball back for Coffeyville.

After the fourth down hold, Coffeyville got the ball back and went 76 yards in eight plays culminating with freshmen Antwan Barksdale, from Topeka Kansas, galloping 28 yards for a Coffeyville touchdown.  Cooper Lee's extra point made the overall score 24-7 in favor of the Red Ravens.

The first half of play ended with Ellsworth closing the gap on a 42 yard field goal to post a halftime score of 24-10 in favor of Coffeyville.

Halfway through the third quarter, freshmen Red Raven kicker Cooper Lee struck again with a 36 yard field goal to extend the Red Raven lead out to 27-10.

The last six minutes of the third quarter saw a flurry of offense from the Ellsworth Panthers.  Ellsworth scored touchdowns on subsequent drives at the end the third quarter to pull the Panthers within three points of Coffeyville, 27-24.

With the momentum squarely in favor of Ellsworth to start the fourth quarter, Coffeyville was able to squash the comeback bid from the Panthers by capitalizing on a flurry of Panther mistakes.

The Red Ravens scored four touchdowns in the fourth quarter starting with a bad punt by the Panthers and  then three straight fumbles by the Panthers.

The first Red Raven fourth quarter score was a seven yard pass from receiver Cole Murphy to sophomore halfback Mauricio Chio, from Olathe Kansas.  The next Coffeyville score also involved Cole Murphy but he was on the receiving end of a 14 yard touchdown pass from Coleman Key.  Coleman Key stayed hot with his third touchdown pass of the game, a 18 yard strike to freshmen wide receiver Isaiah McIntyre, from Tampa Florida.  The final touchdown for the Red Ravens came on a three yard scamper from freshmen running back Jose McDonald, from Wichita Kansas.

Those 28 fourth quarter points ended up securing the victory for the Red Ravens, 55-27.

Leaders for the Red Ravens included Antwan Barksdale rushing 17 carries for 81 yards and one touchdown.  Wide receiver Malik Stanly caught eight passes for 125 yards and one touchdown.  Quarterback Coleman Key was 20 of 34 for 233 yards and 3 touchdowns.  The defense was led by freshmen defensive back Darreon Jackson, from Wichita Kansas with eight total tackles.

Next up for Coffeyville will be a trip to El Dorado Kansas on Saturday, September 10th to take on the Butler Community College Grizzlies.  Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
