Red Raven's Bats Come Alive, Take Two From Highland, 8-4 & 14-2

The Red Raven Baseball team secured two much needed wins over the Highland Scotties at Walter Johnson Park on Thursday, April 20th.  Coffeyville won the first game with a score of 8-4 and then turned around and got the victory in game two by a 14-2 margin. 

The two wins improves Coffeyville's overall record to 19-27 and more importantly improves their KJCCC conference record to 11-19. The Ravens are currently in seventh place in the East division with six conference games remaining.  The top eight teams in the East make the conference post season tournament.

Game one saw Coffeyville fall behind early with Highland scoring two in the top of the second and one in the top of the third to take an early 3-0 lead.  However, the bats came alive for the Red Ravens in the bottom of the third with Coffeyville plating four runs to take a 4-3 lead after three innings.  Highland answered quickly with a run in the top of the fourth to knot the game up at 4-4.  The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth when the Ravens again scored four runs to take the 8-4 lead which would end up being the final score.

Offensively, the Red Ravens were led by sophomore designated hitter Kyler Cook and red-shirt freshman right fielder Antonio Culotta.  Cook went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double and 3 RBI's while Culotta went 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI's.

Pitcher Gavin Heltemes went a strong six innings for the Ravens giving up 4 runs on 6 hits while striking out 4.

The hit parade made a showing at Walter Johnson Park for game two with the Red Ravens pounding out 14 runs on 15 hits.  The Red Ravens won the game going away by a 14-2 score.

Coffeyville scored 4 runs in the third, 3 runs in the fifth and an impressive 7 runs in the sixth to put the game away.

Six players for the Red Ravens had multiple hits in the game including sophomore center fielder Bryan Miranda with three, and right fielder Antonio Culotta, sophomore second baseman Jose Carrasquillo, freshman catcher Bret Mitchell, sophomore first baseman Hunter Kellgren, and freshman shortstop Damon Jorgensen all with two.

Designated hitter Kyler Cook had another three RBI's (for six on the day) with Mitchell and Jorgensen each driving in two.

Freshman right hander Garon Johnson was locked in for the Ravens going six innings and giving up one earned on 6 hits while striking out 5.  Sophomore right hander Bradly Hershey came on in relief in the seventh inning and was impressive while striking out the side.

Coffeyville will return to action on Saturday, April 22nd with a road double header at Highland Kansas.  Game times are set for 2:00 and 4:00 pm.
